Samsung Forms a New Team for Chipset Production

Samsung Forms a New Team for Chipset Production – Samsung Forms a New Team for Chipset Production. In early 2022, Samsung released the Galaxy S22 series with two SoC variants, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200. However, the Exynos 2200’s performance drew criticism.

There are rumors that the upcoming Galaxy S23 series will only use Qualcomm’s latest mobile platform, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. So, what will Samsung do with Exynos?

Qualcomm is confident that Samsung will use it

On the announcement of the 4th quarter earnings call, Qualcomm believes that profits will increase in the second half of Q1 in 2023. This prediction is worth it if Samsung releases the S23 series which will fall around Q1 2023.

Additionally, Qualcomm has confirmed that they no longer hold the 75 percent share of the chipset like the S22, but rather the global share. In other words, all S23 models will use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, as seen from the test results on the Geekbench site.

Samsung forms own team for better chipset design

Reported by South Korean media The Elec on Wednesday (14/12), Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) Business division has formed an application processor (AP) solution development team. The goal of this team is to design the processor. This team will be headed by the Head of MX Development, Choi Won Joon.

AP is an important component in HP that handles communication and data calculations to boost performance and maintain power consumption. For your information, Choi joined Samsung in 2016 after leaving Qualcomm and he is known as an expert in wireless chipsets.

The Elec revealed that a similar team already exists at Samsung System LSI, the division that designs Exynos chips. According to related sources, the formation of the team was because Samsung wanted to develop Exynos for other Samsung devices independently.

Exynos’ failure at S22 was a lesson

Used in the S22 series, the Exynos 2200 has a feature called Game Optimizing Service (GOS). As the name suggests, this feature allows users to adjust system performance while gaming, thereby reducing heat and extending the S22’s battery life.

The problem is, GOS doesn’t only optimize games, but other applications that aren’t games either so that the HP’s performance actually drops. What’s worse, GOS does not provide options so that users can adjust which applications can be optimized by GOS.

It is known that an S22 user in South Korea made a list of applications affected by GOS. As a result, more than 10,000 applications, including applications from Samsung, Google, to other social media (TikTok, Instagram, Netflix, to Microsoft Office). Even so, benchmark applications are not affected by GOS.

Will a new custom chipset be released in 2025?

Therefore, Samsung also reflects on Apple, which produces Bionic chips. Chips manufactured by Apple continue to perform better than Exynos. The Elec notes that this is because Apple designed its own Bionic chip.

With the team already formed and lessons learned, GSM Arena reported in May 2022 that Samsung would be using its own chipset in the Galaxy S series in 2025. Is that chip an Exynos, or is Samsung looking to build a new chipset? Let’s wait for the official announcement!
